How to Animate a Walk Cycle in 8 Frames

Donald Cjapi·

The Walk Cycle Formula

A walk cycle is the foundation of character animation. With just 8 frames, you can create a convincing walking motion.

Frame Breakdown

  • Contact — Front foot touches ground, body at lowest point
  • Down — Body drops slightly, weight transfers to front foot
  • Passing — Back leg swings forward, passing the standing leg
  • Up — Body at highest point, standing on one leg
  • Contact (mirrored) — Same as frame 1 but with opposite leg
  • Down (mirrored) — Same as frame 2, mirrored
  • Passing (mirrored) — Same as frame 3, mirrored
  • Up (mirrored) — Same as frame 4, mirrored
  • Key Principles

    • The head bobs up and down slightly — highest at the passing position, lowest at contact
    • Arms swing opposite to legs — when right leg is forward, left arm is forward
    • The torso leans slightly in the direction of movement

    Pro Tips

Use onion skinning to see the previous and next frames while drawing. This helps maintain consistent proportions and smooth motion.

Set your FPS to 8-12 for a natural walking speed. Faster FPS makes the character look like they're running.
