Designing Character Sprites for Platformers
Donald Cjapi·
Readability Is Everything
In a platformer, the player character is on screen 100% of the time. It needs to be instantly recognizable against any background.
Design Principles
Strong Silhouette
Your character should be identifiable from silhouette alone. Give them a distinctive shape — a pointy hat, a flowing cape, or an oversized head.
High Contrast
Use colors that pop against typical platformer backgrounds (sky blue, grass green, cave brown). Bright, saturated colors work well for the main character.
Clear Proportions
Most platformer characters use exaggerated proportions:
- Head: 1/3 to 1/2 of total height
- Body: Compact torso
- Legs: Short but visible — they need to animate convincingly
Animation Essentials
A platformer character needs at minimum:
- Idle (2-4 frames): Subtle breathing or blinking
- Run (6-8 frames): Full run cycle
- Jump (3 frames): Launch, peak, fall
- Land (2 frames): Squash on impact
Size Guidelines
- 16x16: Classic NES style, very limited detail
- 32x32: Sweet spot for most indie platformers
- 64x64: Allows for expressive detail and smooth animation
