Getting Started with Pixel Art: Your First Sprite

Why Pixel Art?

Pixel art is one of the most accessible forms of digital art. You don't need expensive software or a drawing tablet — just a grid, a few colors, and some patience.

Your First Sprite

Start with a 16x16 canvas. This tiny space forces you to think about every single pixel, which is actually a great way to learn.

Step 1: The Silhouette

Begin by blocking out the basic shape of your character in a single color. Don't worry about details yet — focus on making the silhouette readable.

Step 2: Add Base Colors

Pick 3-4 colors for your character. A good rule of thumb: one for skin, one for clothing, one for hair, and one for accessories.

Step 3: Shading

Add a darker shade of each base color for shadows, and a lighter shade for highlights. Place shadows on the bottom and left of forms, and highlights on the top and right.

Step 4: Polish

Zoom out and squint at your sprite. Does it read well at a small size? Clean up any stray pixels and make sure the outline is consistent.

Congratulations — you've made your first pixel art sprite!
